:: Coffee Talk with C&C- Dry February ::

::hat/vineyard vines {similar}, top/topshop {similar}, denim/7FAM {similar}, heels/steve madden, bag/longchamp::

Hey y'all, it's been a while since I've given a good personal update on things going on in my life so I thought I would share my experience, not drinking for 30 days. Let me start by telling you why I chose to take some time off from drinking alcohol.

I have been feeling not so great about myself, see post here about the active changes I made in my routine but I knew I could do more. I decided I need to also start meal prepping lunches for the week on Sundays so that  I stop going out for lunch which saves money and keeps my calorie count under relative control and I feel much better day to day because I am eating healthy food for lunch and not just whatever everyone is going out to get. Let's be honest, no matter how healthy you try to be while out to lunch it's just not the same. So, in those to aspects I was already starting to feel better after the 1st of the year and keeping up those habits has been getting easier but I knew there was even MORE I could be doing.

I then decided I needed to revisit my relationship with alcohol, it's always complicated right? I love going out with my friends and having a couple drinks or enjoying a glass of wine with my husband after work to relax but what was I doing to my body when those situations happened multiple times a week? I knew that any part of me that still felt lethargic after working out and meal prepping was due to my consumption of alcohol. I asked myself, "Can I go 30 days without drinking?" I starting considering a dry period of time back at the beginning of January but knew with everything on my social calendar that February was WAY more realistic of a month to try and succeed at not drinking ANY alcohol for an entire 30 days. Let me guess- you're saying to yourself as you're reading this, "but Carrie February is a 28 day month" and I knew that going in so I am extending it past the last day in February to be the full 30 days! Haha I swear I am not trying to cheat by using the shortest month of the year! You may also be thinking, "Carrie, you're family owns a bar so alcohol supports your life" and that is very true and I LOVE our bar and what it has afforded for our life but I needed to do this for myself!

I made a point to tell my husband, my friends, my parents, and in-laws that I wasn't drinking for 30 days by choice just to readjust my mindset and everyone was really supportive! I also gave out a huge disclaimer to my parents & in-laws that this wasn't a clever trick to stop drinking because I am pregnant because I AM NOT!! I just needed time off.

 ::wedding dress/bhldn {similar, similar}::

So, what has been my experience? I will say I did miss wine, it's like nighttime coffee to me- I enjoy a glass and crave it! When I say it out loud it sounds really bad haha but I also crave coffee and for some reason I don't feel as ashamed about that even though the caffeine it offers me is addictive too! My husband and I went out to our favorite local Italian restaurant within the first week of not drinking and I almost caved and ordered a glass of wine because when the waitress set down his Cab, the scent legit exploded out of the glass! I felt like Edward in Twilight when the fan blows Bella's scent in his direction in the Biology class! I held strong with water and lemon despite my husband's attempts to describe exactly how good the wine was to torture me. Isn't marriage fun :)  I do look forward to a casual glass of wine but I realized that I definitely don't need to be drinking a bottle of it alone on a Friday or Saturday night while my husband is at the bar working. Who am I having fun with? A glass or two of red is plenty and still decently healthy for me.

I do not miss vodka, which is usually what I drink while out with friends. "Vodka, soda with a lemon please", and I usually end up with a lime unless I'm at my family's bar because they just get me there!! I would be fine never having another drop of vodka again. I know that at some point I probably will, it's what most of the girls in my group drink and at bars it's not always easy (or smart) to order wine but I know I have just as much fun out with my friends sober as I do after a few drinks.

Speaking of- no I did not just sit at home every night twirling my hair. I went out, I kept up my routine as usual in terms of dinners & drinks with our friends minus the drinks! At first, people were uncomfortable with the fact that I wasn't drinking but I felt better, I was out later and felt more awake while we were out. It could just be more clear headed but I had a better time! Additionally, I was drinking more water because in situations where I'd be drinking alcohol I was drinking water instead! Sometimes in order to not feel left out I'd order a lemon La Croix because I missed the bubbles! On nights I knew we'd be out a while I'd have a cup of coffee while I got ready so I could have enough energy to make it thru the late night.

Overall I'd say my experience was good and I have a way better perspective on alcohol.

I didn't have many side effects except I craved sweets like crazy. Take away one thing you crave and your body will supplement with another! I handled this by having a La Croix (lemon & passionfruit are my fav flavors!) or a few pieces of candy and I'd feel better!

 Working out was way easier in the morning because I woke up actually rested without being encumbered by alcohol. I was hydrated because I was drinking more water and eating healthy because  I didn't crave greasy food which is a side effect of alcohol for me. On the weekends I woke up early and made myself a healthy breakfast because I had the energy and didn't feel hung over from the previous night! I got a lot more done on the weekends because again I wasn't tired and hung over from the night before!

Taking all of the benefits into account as I go forward I think I will definitely drink far less, wine will be a treat I will observe in much, much more moderation! I do really love nights on our patio, grilling out with a glass of wine when the weather warms up and I KNOW I won't give that up! It's also really empowering to know I can set my mind to something and stick with it despite temptation both internal and external! I would definitely recommend TRYING a dry 30 day challenge because it has been so amazing to see how my body and mentality has benefited from the time off!

Have you tried a dry 30 day challenge???

:: February Favorites ::

February is over and I'm here to share the things I was loving this past month! So, without further ado...

1. Bubba tumbler mug I have been making smoothies for breakfast and this cup is great because it holds my full smoothie and has a straw large enough to make drinking easier. I am going to change out the straw though HA because it's a rubber straw and I want to use a plastic one instead.

2. Vital Proteins!! I recently picked up the Vital Proteins Beauty Greens and have been adding it to my smoothies every morning. It is a blend of non-GMO Marine collagen peptides combined with organic greens to provide Vitamin A, hyaluronic acid, and probiotics to improve health of hair, skin and nails. I have noticed my nails are a bit stronger and hair smoother but am still waiting to see any effect to my skin health. More to come!

3. Smoothies! Obviously I couldn't talk about the first two items without sharing my smoothie recipe! I refer to it lovingly as the "Green Meanie" lol (Scream Queens reference, anyone?)

Ingredients
-handful of spinach
-1 medium banana
-1/2 cup of blueberries
-1/2 cup frozen pineapples
-1/2 cup frozen mango
- 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
- 1 scoop of Vital Proteins Beauty Greens

Instructions
Combine all ingredients into blender or preferred blending machine ( I used a NutriBullet)
Blend until smooth
Transfer to preferred cup

4. Cereal!! While roaming the grocery store at the beginning of the month there was an end-cap of Special K Almond & Vanilla cereal and for some reason I felt compelled to try it. When I was young I used to eat cereal every morning before school but eventually moved on but I am back on it! I eat a bowl while I get ready for work, Win tries to steal it too so it must be good. Needless to say I am going thru a TON of almond milk between smoothies and cereal :)

5. Spring Scented Candle! If you've read this blog for any length of time you know my addiction to products that contain rose ingredients so it was only natural that I tend to love candles scented with rose. I have been burning this candle since the beginning of February and really love it! It gives off and really soft scent and isn't too girly!!

6. BBG!! Y'all this program is HARD!! I was definitely inspired by Rachel Parcell's journey with BBG so I decided to give it a try and I LOVE it! She is totally correct that the Sweat app makes it easier to get thru the workouts day to day. I am not going to lie I only complete 2 laps per circuit each time thru because I don't want to get ripped and I don't need to see crazy results right away. I am trying to create a fitness routine that is realistic for me to incorporate into my life everyday and trying to complete 4 laps each circuit just isn't my thing. Even from week 1 to week 6 I can see results but I am not nearly as brave as Rach to share those pics just yet :)

7. Slides! This Spring's update to flats, slides are slowly taking over my shoe situation and below I've pulled together some of my current faves!

:: Product Review- See by Chloe Glyn Wedge ::

::dress/shein {similar}, bag/target {similar}::

Hey pretties!! I've been noticing a certain pair of wedges getting A LOT of attention from other bloggers due to the Shopbop sale and I ordered them last year for my trip to Mexico so I thought I'd share a review after having them for an entire season!

The first thing I love about these wedges is how lightweight they are! In general, wedges are extremely easy to walk in despite the heel height because your foot is essentially flat so there is no awkward balancing act happening! Sometimes though, wedges can get heavy so you feel like your clomping around but with these you never feel that way! They are so comfortable and easy to walk in you'll feel like you're wearing flat sandals. Also- they are so versatile because of the neutral tones you can wear with jeans and an eyelet tank or with a ruffled sundress so whether on vacation or going out with friends, these shoes make getting dressed easy!

WARNING- these wedges are TALL!! If you're already a little insecure about wearing heels because of your height, be aware the wedges on these are no joke high. I would recommend for my tall soul sisters the flat sandal version instead because at 5'5" I get a little awkward about just how tall these make me! And I'm on the short side of average height.

I would HIGHLY recommend these shoes, especially now during the Shopbop sale because they are a bit of an investment but I'll tell you that they're worth it because you'll be living in these all season!

::pardon the blister, NOT from these sandals!!! Insta from our Mexican getaway::

:: Hearts & Flowers ::

::similar mug::

Now let me be clear about what I truly love about Valentine's day- all the girl gifts!! I do not expect anything from my husband in terms of a gift because that's not his style nor is it mine because I understand Valentine's day is more of a Hallmark  holiday. But I do love all the pretty, girly dresses, shoes, home décor so I am all in for this day!

 Below I've pulled together some of my favorite Valentine's day items!

:: Coffee Talk with C&C- January Favorites ::

I hate to be THIS person but isn't January one of the most useless months of the year? After NYE it's kind of like, "OK now what?" But this month was my coziest month EVER! I lived in some great Sherpa sweatshirts, leggings, and amazing boots! I added in some new and added back some old favorites to my skincare routine that have been saving my skin from the nightmare that is January weather- I mean honestly it was 60 degrees one day and LITERALLY the next it was 14!! How is that right? It's amazing I've kept any sort of sinus infection at bay.

I will say that my recent trip to Raleigh and Charleston brought me so much joy and was much needed to be traveling with some of my best girlfriends to see my very best friend and her brand new baby! Charleston is amazing and I intend on doing a post on recommendations based on our (too) short trip!

But on to the favorites

1. SHERPA!! I added a few Sherpa sweatshirts to my ever growing sweatshirt arsenal and have LIVED in them when it's not completely inappropriate to be so casual! The are soft, warm, and pair easily with leggings or skinnies to run errands or snuggle on the couch! Below I've pulled together some amazing, cozy options to buy right now!

Cozy...

2. Skincare!! Of course, this time of year is all about wellness but after a Holiday season of eating and drinking whatever I pleased  I needed a month of repairing my skin! I received a Bliss giftcard for Christmas and did not waste anytime spending it to ensure I had everything I needed to get my skin back in check for the new year!

Skincare...

3. Sip by Swell travel mug! This one may seem silly but I have spent too long getting spilled all over taking my coffee from the car to the office. I don't know if I'm the only person in the world who doesn't know how to put a lid on a travel mug but once I invested in this Sip by Swell travel mug from Target my whole life changed! Below are some of my favorite colors... I purchased the white because I have the white water bottle (I've included some of those too)!!

Travel Mugs...

4. New pink lip combo! I have been searching high and low to find my go-to pink lip combo and I FINALLY found it! Fortunately for me (and you) it's a really inexpensive pairing for products. I use this lipstick as a base and follow it up with this gloss!!

5. Warm winter boots. It's no secret that January brings cold and snow so I thought it wouldn't be a waste of money to invest in a pair of cute winter boots that aren't Uggs or Hunters.

Winter Boots...

6. Updated red polish! If there is anything that makes me feel pulled together it is a great manicure and red ALWAYS looks great. I do my nails myself from day to day so it's important that the formula and color work well for me! Generally I use this red but I wanted something with a bit more pop so I picked up this one from the Essie Gel Couture collection! I HIGHLY recommend for anyone doing their mani's at home, the formula, brush, and colors are amazing!

I am hard at work find my February favorites and pulling together some fun new posts to get us thru this winter slump!

:: Movie Night & Healthy Snack ::

::image via pinterest::

There is simply nothing I love more than a night at home, snuggled on the couch with a good movie or show to stream! I am a major homebody and with a kitten that loves to snuggle I find it very hard to leave! So, it's important that I find healthy snacks to eat while being cuddled up at home because when I become engrossed in a new movie or show, I mindlessly stuff my face with whatever is in front of me so if it's not healthy it can turn into a bad situation.

I wanted to share 2 of my favorite healthy snacks with you, one salty and one sweet!!

:: Spring Ahead with Warby Parker ::

One thing I don't showcase on my blog very often is the fact that I wear glasses most of the time. I am near sighted and I need glasses to work on my computer all day and driving at night but for blog shoots I don't need them so I forego wearing them. But Spring is coming and there is no better way to transition into the new season than with a brand new pair of eyeglasses!

::warby parker {puppy not included unfortunately}::

I LOVE the way a pair of glasses can change up a look and Warby Parker is one of my absolute favorite brands for eye glasses because they offer so many different styles, their at-home try on service is so fun, and uploading and ordering your prescription frames online is extremely easy! With Spring on the way, getting a new pair of frames to brighten up your face  is necessary and Warby Parker is the best place to do it! I've rounded up a few of my favorite new pairs from their Spring collection and how to style them for the new season!

::bell eye glasses::

::sweater/revolve, denim/express, white tee/nordstrom, loafers/nordstrom, necklace/gorjana, earrings/net-a-porter::

I love the soft color of these frames and they pair nicely with blush & gold!

::bell eye glasses::

::sweatshirt/saks fifth avenue, leggings/nordstrom, flats/anthropologie, backpack/nordstrom::

Spring is going to see a resurgence of bright, bold, saturated hues and clear frames compliment them perfectly.

::hyde eye glasses::

blouse/new york & co, skirt/nordstrom, slides/net-a-porter, lips/charlotte tilbury {nude kate}::

2018's Color of the Year is ultra violet but we'll ease into the bold hue this Spring with lavender touches and these glasses pair nicely! (pun intended)

::louise eye glasses::

::dress/nordstrom, flats/dsw, necklace/gorjana, bracelet/gorjana, watch/marc jacobs, polish/essie gel couture {off-duty style}::

Nothing is more chic than a black dress with metallic accents and these Louise frames are amazing! Whether work or play, this outfit will never go out of style.

Enjoy browsing all the new styles introduced in the Spring collection and if you order multiple pairs that's ok because the at-home try on service allows you to try on frames with your wardrobe so you know they'll all match! I'll definitely be giving a few of these frames a whirl!

Thank you to Warby Parker for asking me to help announce the launch of their Spring 2018 Collection!

:: Ruffle Sleeves & Check Print ::

::top/zara {similar}/ denim/articles of society {via wantable}, sunnies/zaful, earrings/zara {similar}, heels/nordstrom, monogram bracelet/moon & lola::

You've seen this outfit before, linked here but I wanted to talk  about the girl in these images and the recent changes she has made to her morning routine.

My entire life I have been thin with very, very little effort! I was born with a metabolism that can withstand 4 years of eating a bagel with nacho cheese, Doritos, and a Mountain Dew for lunch everyday in high school and still fit into a size 2 with next to no exercise. Gross! The poor thing was put thru even worse in my early twenties as I went out until all hours of the evening with my friends only to fourth meal it before dozing off but thanks to a retail job I walked it off most of the next day. And then one day, I got an office job and suddenly I was putting my metabolism thru the greatest work of its life which was not changing my eating habits and sitting all day.

When I was preparing for my wedding I started working out a few days a week just to tighten up because my dress was very form fitting and honestly I knew I needed to be more active. I LOVED the way I looked at my wedding, I felt great and when I look back at pictures I don't cringe at my exposed arms or bloated belly from too much champagne in the pool the entire week before. Oops. But then I saw these images and while I understand a ruffle sleeve tee and boyfriend jeans add volume I also know how I felt about myself the entire year leading up to these pictures being taken. I had a constant inner monologue with myself about how I don't want to obsess over everything I put in my mouth or constantly wonder how many steps I got in, I just wanted to live my life. But everyday when I got dressed I would feel instantly TERRIBLE! Some of my favorite jeans were uncomfortable, jackets felt tight on my arms, and black became my favorite color and to be honest will always be my favorite color to wear because I'm blonde it just looks chic AF. I was making excuses for being lazy and my self esteem imploded. Yes,  I added yoga to my routine in 2017 and I absolutely adore what yoga has done for my mood, my back, and my anxiety but it's not the strenuous work out I need based on my activity levels the rest of the day.

Well, my sweet baby angel kitten Win wakes me up promptly at 5a to be fed because she's a princess and most days I would throw food in her bowl and head right back to bed for an hour (sigh I miss that extra hour) but then after seeing these pictures I decided I needed a change. I would stay up at 5a and go down to our treadmill and do intervals, walk, power walk, or some kind of cardio followed by light strength training. There are so many apps out in the market that it's insane not to work out, you have a profesh trainer right in your phone! I've listed a few of my favorites below. I told my husband about my new routine and told him to gently keep my honest by encouraging me when I didn't miss a day and he has done such a great job! And a huge thank you to technology for making watching TV on the treadmill possible.

Be advised that all cardio is accompanied by an episode of The Office, New Girl or Friends.

Monday- brisk walk followed by light leg & butt strength training
Tuesday- intervals using the Running app, followed by chest and arms strength, and then after work 45 minute Flow Yoga class
Wednesday- depending on how I'm feeling I'll do running intervals or back to a brisk walk with back and shoulder strength training. Sometimes I go to Yoga
Thursday-intervals using the Running app, followed by butt, legs, and ab strength training and usually after work go to a 45 minute Relax Yoga class
Friday- intervals or brisk walk followed by a "trouble spot" strength training, so I work on an area of the body I think needs a little extra love which ends up being my arms most weeks
Saturday- brisk walk followed by a Flow Yoga class in the morning
Sunday- rest but  I usually clean this day so I'm burning calories anyway

Favorite apps for iPhone

Map My Run

Another great motivator is my Apple iWatch Series 1 my Dad got me for Christmas!! For whatever reason, much like impressing a class instructor I am highly motivated to impress my watch. It gives me little celebrations when I complete a goal and positive reminders that I still have work to do, I love it!! I intend to do a full review on my (non technological, regular person) impression of the iWatch once I've had more time to get used to it.

So far, I haven't noticed a huge difference in a physical weight loss but the way I feel in my clothes has certainly gotten better and I REFUSE to let go of pieces in my closet that I love because I can't get active and be able to fit into them anymore. And I want to be clear this isn't about being a number on a scale or a certain size on a tag but feeling good about myself. Additionally- I love my photographer and she does an amazing job capturing not only my style but my personality as well so none of this has to do with her!! So there is my super chatty, recent changes that are kind of in the spirit of New Year, new me but since I started in 2017 I'm not really that different.

:: Yellow 70's Vibes ::

::sweater/nordstrom, denim/express (on sale!!)::

One of my favorite trends from 2017 has to be lace up sweaters! There is a subtle sex appeal to them but they are still so easy to wear for any occasion! I thought I would pull together some of the best options out there for you just in case you wanted to try or are already loving it like me!

Lace Up Sweater Shop Guide

Looking forward to Spring 2018 trends, I see a lot of 90's nostalgia coming our way in the form of plastic (think windbreakers) and slip dresses in ditzy prints over tee shirts with bulky combat boots. I lived thru the 90's so I am cautious to dive back into any of the upcoming trends but we'll see what strikes my fancy once the time comes! Here are a few other prediction of what trends will blow up in the next season

Bright, saturated colors- monochromatic and/or color block looks will dominate this one.

Fringe- from accessories to shredded tees, it will take the place of overly distressed garments

Sheer & transparent- sheer clothing and transparent accessories will be an interesting element added

Lavender- with the Pantone color of the year being purple (Ultra Violet), Spring will ease into this year's COY

Fanny packs- with the 90's revival it only makes sense this would be the IT accessory

Shrunken, sportier sunnies- oversized shades of dominated for the last decade or so, but SP18 will see razor edges and mirrored lenses.

What are your SP18 trend predictions?
